I use Apptio Cloudability for cloud cost management - optimization of cloud spend, resource cleanup during product decommission.
  • Clear view of resources associated with products
  • Overall view of resource costs by type
  • Reporting is clunky
  • Filtering is limited and not pervasive between various Apptio tools
  • Limited number of fields that can be brought in
Great fit for integrating all cost views within Apptio Cloudability

We currently use Apptio Cloudability for the following key functions (not limited to) Rightsizing, Optimization, Cost Transparency. These details are in turn used to bring business value to different personas within the org. From procurement, to engineering to finance to executives to application owners and so forth. We also look at bringing in the cost details to ApptioOne
  • New Apptio BI reporting seems promising
  • Showcasing untagged costs
  • First step towards rightsizing and optimization explorations
  • Anomaly detection
  • Combined reporting views from the data sources
  • Showcasing the dependencies with the recommendations
  • Ability to effective allocate shared costs
Viewing first level information with regards to untagged costs and optimization opportunities. For further deep dives, viewing dependencies and even anomaly detection would look at the CSP functionality

We use it currently to increase visibility and help coordinate costs to help us understand our usages across multiple departments who never had insight into this information. Our costs began to spiral out of control and now we have an understanding of drivers and trends. I was recently able to identify a spike in costs on one resource that we met on as a group and developed a strategy to save a good chunk of money on a monthly basis.
  • Visualizes the trends.
  • Notifications via email to keep us aware of activities.
  • Helps us forecast better.
  • The modeling is a bit difficult to navigate as a new user in my opinion.
I think the best value that it offers is visibility for many different user types as opposed to the native tools the products offer that are limited to the engineering teams generally. I think it is appropriate if you have multiple cloud providers as well as it puts everything in the same format for easier reviews.

We use for multiple hyper scalers to view spend. Optimize and cross charge
  • Optimizing with rightsizing
  • Visibility with dashboards
  • Email alerts/notificaitons
  • Budget and forecastkng
  • Reports on quarters
  • Report formats are limited in my opinion.
Normalization of multi clouds helps my consumers see the full spend and possibilities to improve

Apptio Cloudability is a cost analysis tool that helps us keep track of what we are using within Azure Cloud. It has helped us keep track of specific costs and breakdown by application owner (with appropriate tagging). This tool also helps us decide future spending requirements.
  • Cost Analysis
  • Spending breakdown by Product/Application
  • Forecast of cost for future budget spending
  • Setup of account to communicate with Cloud Providers
  • Tagging documentation
Not only has Cloudability shown it to be a top-notch product when it comes to Cloud cost analysis, but its customer service support is very responsive. Once you understand the tool (and most of its features), it becomes easy to create reports and show where your Cloud spending is actually going.

We predominantly use Apptio Cloud ability to track costs across multiple cloud platforms of clients and various internal projects related to AWS and Azure accounts. Specifically, we configure different persona-based reports by leveraging multiple dimensions. Sharing the reports to the stakeholders to track the live costs across multiple accounts. Downloading the reports at scheduled intervals for internal reviews. For comparing the historical usage across different accounts and environments. Further eagerly waiting for the workflow integrations like servicenow and other third party ITSM and alerting and automation tools which further make cloudability even more robustness.
  • In Analyzing the detailed analysis of the cloud costs usage specifically in terms of analyzing AWS CUR reports which consists of very huge files.
  • In terms of offering the rich set of dimensions related to the resources across the clouds and sharing it to levels of personas
  • It's good that APIs that allow integrations with other systems for data sharing and automation based on the organizational needs.
  • Automation and policy enforcement especially in terms of activities like shutting down of the resources in the Non Business hours.
  • It would be good to see if it offers integrations with wide variety of tools like Service NOW, MS Teams, DataDog, Slack and also with cloud native Notification services like SNS etc.
  • It would be great if Apptio cloudability provides comprehensive documentation and training
  • There is scope for improvement on Enhanced cost optimization Algorithms.
Apptio Well-Suited Scenarios: Specifically in Multi-Cloud Environments , cost visibility and transparency, Budget planning and forecasting, cost allocation, chargeback and show back scenarios.
Apptio Less Appropriate Scenarios are Smaller-scale users might find simpler cost management solutions.
If cloud usage is consistent and easy to predict, a more basic cost management tool might suffice.
For organizations with very limited budgets or those looking for more budget-friendly cost management options, Apptio Cloud ability's extensive features might be considered costly compared to other simpler and more affordable alternatives.

- facilitate cost allocation and provide transparency to engineering and finance teams - leveraging view and business dimension to provide separation of concern - construct more business oriented metrics, based on cloud spending - multi cloud provider support is plus, in case of adoption of more providers - saving plans and ri reservation centrally managed and reviewed
  • multi cloud support
  • report and widget creation and composition
  • easy of setup
  • missing SSO role integration - must be finalized in app after login
  • tag-based restricted view does not permit access to container sections
  • resource inventory only for basic type of resources
Great and usable tool, it provides lots of features and capabilities. Multi cloud provider support and all kind of grapgh and metric coverage make the solution a good fit for all who want to start creating their own cloud cost management platform. They also provide updates and rollout new features on a regular base.

Sometimes the features seems to be added in a very limited fashion, not including the overall platform (eg. tag-based restricted view can not provide access to containers sections).

  • Single source of truth for cost and usage reporting across multi-cloud environments (AWS, Azure & GCP).
  • Significantly leverage Business Dimensions & Business Metrics to respectively create custom mappings & custom equations that are inputs into many of our financial reporting processes.
  • Apptio Cloudability API leveraged to expose cost data to PowerBI for operational reporting alongside other business data (Salesforce).
  • End users are granted access to their Views based on data they need to see & are enabled with dashboards and reports to track and manage their own spend.
  • FinOps power users leverage RI, SP and CUD purchasing modules to help make purchase decisions.
  • In-month forecast estimation (not perfect feature, but good enough for directional updates).
  • Business Mappings API
  • Granular Reporting
  • Relatively easy to configure with IaaS vendors
  • Cost Reallocation - Not offered for Multi-Tenant, Cost Sharing is a Beta feature that is very limited in function & not able to reallocate rules
  • Resource Inventory - big gap vs. what CloudHealth offers, beta feature is good but it can't save/subscribe to reports
  • Anomaly detection - feature highlights trivial cost rises & consistently misses the real anomalies
Very well suited for multi-cloud environments where you need a single source of truth for reporting + custom mappings for data. The Business Mappings features is extremely functional & the Dashboard features are as close to a Visualization tool as you will find. Customers with monolithic architectures will get a lot of value out of Right Sizing, and the RI/SP purchasing provide very good (if sometimes confusing) recommendations.
Apptio Cloudability is not a fit for multi-tenant reallocation/telemetry cost. As we expand into these type of architectures, it would be the top reason we evaluate other tools.

We use Cloudability to see and manage our cloud spend throughout the organization. Cloudability allows us to easily consolidate and normalize our tags for reporting as well as segment our spend into views so that our dashboards and reports show the right information to the right users. Cloudability is able to provide optimization recommendations for each of our groupings as well, helping us target projects to work on and track our progress. Cloudability has not limits on licensing for reporting as well, so we can ensure that everyone with management or operation of cloud spend can have access to see their numbers.
  • Reporting is very easy to use for creating new reports and very fast to run with flexibility to develop single reports as well as multi-report dashboards that be shared over multiple teams.
  • Integration with other data sources through TotalCost allows for more robust reporting that integrates cost and usage data with other data points from across the business.
  • Allows you to consolidate and normalize your tags so that you can easily group your spend and usage regardless of tagging hygiene.
  • Rightsizing/Optimization provides easy views into opportunities with details about how to save as well as the ability to track your savings ROI.
  • Reporting is based on the assumption that end-users will log into the web-friendly tool, so it does not currently provide export capabilities to all user classes as well as email report functionality.
  • Resource inventory reporting is limited to certain services and certain fields; however, Apptio seems to be working to develop out this solution more.
  • Rightsizing is limited to EC2, RDS, EBS, S3, and Redshift. It would be nice to see ELB, Gateways, and other services identified for optimization.
  • Limited ability to track custom savings opportunities within the tool so that you can build KPI's off progress or lack of progress.
For FinOps teams with limited staff resources and technical/programming skillsets, Cloudability is a great tool to help you report on and track your cloud usage and spend, easily. The tool aligns well to the FinOps domains and practices defined by the FinOps Foundation and provides robust ways to surface and track opportunities for improvement and automation. For teams looking for automated or very detailed optimization, the tool is lacking services and features. For teams with very specific use cases that require data sets outside of cloud vendors, you may need to invest in the TotalCost package, and even still, you may find some gaps. Overall, I would recommend this tool highly for 99% of users looking for a better way to manage their cloud spend.

I use it for reporting on AWS costs by product, service and team, and for analysis and investigation of anomalies. I also use it as a health dashboard for our AWS spend, meaning that I check my personalized dashboard every day. It has a variety of widgets that compare current trends with historical patterns as a way of identifying anomalous patterns or confirming expected changes. Finally, I configure dashboards for individual Engineering and Data Operations teams so that they can stay aware of the cost impact of their consumption.
  • Enriching tags with additional data sources
  • Allowing for multi-year analysis
  • Analysis of achieved savings through various discount programs
  • It's slower than AWS Cost Explorer
  • The conditional filters require too many clicks to use
  • I don't trust the resource utilization data on the cost widgets. When I've looked at it, which has been sparingly, the data makes no sense for our environment.
It's better than native tools if you use multiple clouds. It's good for reporting, especially allowing for enriching data by adding other data sets to resource tags. It has a wide variety of graphics for widgets. It is easy to administer, which grows in importance as your user base grows. If you want a tool that excels at providing optimization recommendations, I think you will be disappointed. Also, if you want to driver-based forecasting, as opposed to forecasting based solely on historical trends, it is no help. I can't figure out how to create custom metrics, so it's limited in terms of calculating unit economics. Also, they should have a one-click way to get a report into Google Sheets, like Jira does. It would save me several steps every time I need to export a report into CSV for analysis.
